I got to know about AMC's The Walking Dead Universe when the main TV show had already ended, with only the spin-offs remaining. After watching the main show, I found it very interesting, and I took it upon myself to watch all the spin-offs, sequels, and prequels.
One of those that I finished watching earlier this year was Fear The Walking Dead. I finished watching it a long time ago, and I鈥檝e been procrastinating about making a review鈥攅specially with the fact that it's a long series (8 seasons) and I didn鈥檛 know where to start. Lol
First of all, before watching it, I read many reviews and saw that a lot of people gave it a poor rating. But for me, I found that poor rating strange. Let me tell you鈥擨 actually downloaded the show to watch, and after I was through, I had to delete the episodes because they were occupying space. But guess what? Sometimes I find myself going back to YouTube to search for some parts of the series just to relive them. Sometimes I come across Fear The Walking Dead posts on social media, and I feel like rewatching the series. I love it! I love the plot鈥攐nly that they overstretched some parts of it鈥攁nd above all, I can't stop thinking about the characters. Not all of them though, because some of them were wack.
Okay, this show portrayed what was missing in the main show: the first instances of the virus outbreak. Madison's family, comprising her children Nick and Alicia, and Travis鈥檚 family, which included his son, wife, and daughter, were the two main families that were well-pictured during the outbreak. Nick was the first to encounter the dead brought back to life. And when he explained to his mom what he saw, they didn鈥檛 believe him because Nick was a drug addict.
Hell was let loose when the outbreak became very pronounced and people were left to cater for themselves. Of course, the government tried to curb the situation, but it was beyond them. Along the line, they met Daniel and his family, and Victor Strand. All of them teamed up on Victor鈥檚 ship and sailed off into the large water body to escape the dead.
As expected in an apocalyptic world, the fight for survival was top-notch鈥攏ot just a fight against the dead, but also against people, all of them aiming for power to help them survive.
There were deaths of favorite characters, and I must confess, I felt heartbroken at some of them, especially Nick, who was killed by a little girl, Charlie, yeah, *my Charlie...I love how the little girl played her part so well to her stage or real(physical) maturity in the show.
One thing I must commend is the characters used. At first, I hated how some of them were very off鈥攁s in, not familiar faces鈥攂ecause I expected to see a good number of actors from the original show. But I eventually loved the characters, and at the top of the list for me is June. Gosh!
The character development of this lady was top-notch. She came in mid-season and became one of the reckoning forces in the series. The next one is Althea, commonly called Al. I fell in love with this lady鈥攆rom her unique name to her all-concerned focus on journalism.
Luci, John, Dwight, Alicia, Daniel, and Grace are not left out of this mention. These ones, though maybe not categorized as the main characters like Morgan, Madison, Victor, and co., I just loved their individual paths. Yeah, I understand that they all played according to the script, but storylines can make us hate characters too, can鈥檛 they?
The biggest moment for me was when Morgan from the main show met Dwight, also from the main show. Oh my God! I felt really good seeing part of the cast from the original show bringing their stories into Fear The Walking Dead. That moment was everything for me because, by then, Morgan was talking about heading back home (Alexandria) while Dwight was coming from there.
Another thing the show carried that interested me so much was how they brought the CRM armies and the talk about their camp into play.
Mehn, this show鈥攚ith all the spin-offs鈥攊s so interconnected that you鈥檒l feel like going back to rewatch a previous one when watching a new one, just to find something you didn鈥檛 notice earlier. Funny enough, it was through this show we got to know that the CRM camp had been in existence right from the beginning.
The parts I didn鈥檛 like were the seasons after the bomb blast and the Padre camp. No lies, I loved the action-packed events, but the storyline for me was very off鈥攅specially with the return of Madison and Troy. Their return was unnecessary鈥攐r let me say, the plot was off鈥攂ecause they were declared and seen dead in the previous seasons before their return.
Anyway, I would rate this an 8/10. That鈥檚 a pass mark.
I鈥檓 looking forward to watching another one, which is The Walking Dead: The World Beyond.
I have also been following the spin-offs of the main show such as Dead City and Daryl & Carol. One of these days, I will come and share my opinion about them.
