When it comes to our rights, a lot of people do not really understand when the police say you have the right to remain silent. They say so implying that the right to speak has been lost. This is the same thing that happens when the law says we have the right to vote and be voted for, in other words, we have the right, but if we choose not to vote and not to participate in electoral processes, then it’s not an issue. You do not see the police tying someone’s mouth because they are being arrested. Even though they have lost the right to speak and only have the right to keep quiet the fact remains that whatever they say from that point onward could and will be used against them. Same way if you do not vote you shouldn’t complain when the candidate you wish for does not enter power. But then this is the point where people get things wrong, for the fact that there are people who choose not to vote only means they should be encouraged to and does not mean they should be forced to. Forcing people to vote removes what we know as democracy.
Democracy is a government of the people, for the people and by the people. This means it is only meant to have the people’s interest at heart, and something that has the people’s interest at heart should not force the people in any way to do anything. Their duty is to serve the people not just the ones that decide to vote or the ones that voted but not for them. When we begin to force people to vote or do anything at all, it’s no longer a democratic government, it has become a dictatorship system of government as it is one of the forms of government that forces its citizens to do what they want. The right to vote can be exercised or ignored, it is a right, and whoever wields that right has the ability to exercise it or ignore it. The only thing they can’t do is abuse it. Abusing such a right is what should warrant punishments. Ignoring one’s right already has its own consequences and such consequences are already hectic. I mean, having to see someone you don’t like in power every single day for the next four years is already a pain in the ass.
But when you think about it from another perspective, perhaps there should be a way to sort out those who do care about the politics of this world as they also have a share in the blame when the wrong people enter power. If there was a way for them to suffer for their negligence personally, it would have been great because at the end of the day, it seems everyone is suffering for the negligence of those who do not just care. But even with this, I still believe forcing is the way to make them start caring, I believe enlightenment and persuasion is what these set of people need. If people do not see a problem in something, they won’t try to fix it. Some think all they want to do is to be well enough to take care of themselves and their families, not knowing that a good government will make sure they can achieve twice that result with half the effort.
