Growing up sex talk was one of the major topics that sounded taboo. A lot of people shy away from it, especially our parents. Sometimes I wonder if we fell from heaven, because they made it sound like they don’t do it so we shouldn’t. But the more we grow older, it becomes obvious that these are conversations that are not harmful if taught the right way. Children should know how they came into existence at least, they should know the effect it would have on them if they should start engaging in the act now. They should be aware of the consequences of sexual relationships and how it would affect their lives so that they are not deceived by those looking to take advantage of them. They should be aware of the difference between sex and love and the thin line that makes people believe the deceit of others. Else we will raise kids who can be easily influenced by the things they do not know.

As a teenager I came across a lot of teenagers (male and female) who lost their innocence to those who were supposed to be looking out for them because at the time, they knew nothing about it. For some, it was the friend of an elder sibling, for others it was an aunty or uncle. Some were even introduced into other forms of sexual activities like gayism because they did not know what it was at that time. They only knew that they loved the feeling afterwards, some did not even like the feeling but it messed up with their minds so bad that they became addicts. It’s a pity that a lot of these things go on in our society and the parents of these kids know nothing about what is going on with their kids. It is usually too late when they get to find out. SOme kids even try speaking up but their parents who were supposed to believe them did not do anything about it and even believed the people abusing their children over their children.
I remember when my sister complained to my mum about things a pastor was telling her privately, my mum found excuses other than the fact that he was making advances at an underaged child. Luckily we were able to deal with it on our own, but it proves what I said earlier. This is why I think sex education begins when the child can talk and understand simple things. Let them know it is not right for anybody to touch them in certain parts of their bodies, as time goes on it continues by being involved in their lives, not just as a parent but as a friend who understands their emotions without judgement. Children tend to hide things from their parents at certain stages in their lives, but they tell their friends everything. If a parent can learn to study their children to know when they need a friend, they will be able to catch everything going on with them on time and guide them on how to navigate them.
