The World Building community has a daily prompt they put out.
Which encourages us to put our thinking caps on and discuss an aspect of our world. Today's prompt is New Frontiers
Uncharted Space
If you look at any navigation map, star chart or galaxy hub. You will see a large dead spot. Uncharted space. Which takes up about 45% of the galaxy and has only one planet charted throughout the whole area. Morkasta.
Nobody can remember when it was discovered not even the Doshans, but, it has always been at the centre of Uncharted Space in most navigation maps.
The dead spot mostly separates The Confederation Zone and the Free Space territory. Nobody knows what lies in that large area and most aren't interested in finding out.
Reports
If you are a Star Jumper you have most likely discussed, Uncharted Space. Some people share stories from the Deep Space Crazies. Who say, that they have travelled all throughout it and have seen things they can't explain.
Wandering planets. Ships, which are piloted and attack anyone nearby. Not, unusual, as there are many Pirate Clans. The weird thing about the ones in Uncharted Space though, is that scans indicate that there are no life signs onboard. Some even talk about large living creatures, the size of cruisers, which float through space eating whatever they can catch.
One of these crazies even came back and formed their own religion. Known as Followers of the Maw. The people who subscribe to this school of thought, believe that there is a creature out there that eats everything it can, growing as it does. It will one day become big enough to devour planets whole. Which will only help to grow the creature even more. In its quest, it will eat everything in the whole universe, explode and the cycle will start again.
But, who believes them? Anyone crazy enough to go wandering around Uncharted Space cannot be seen as a reliable source of information.
The Confederation Expeditions
Professional expansionists. Who believe, if they don't expand, their empire will stagnate and their civilization will fall into another Civil War.
They expanded far and wide. However, all of their expeditions failed when they travelled into Uncharted Space. Giving up on their endeavours, they expanded to parts of space that they could chart.
Until they came into contact with Free Space. It was an easy truce and many humans decided to make the jump to Free Space to live a different kind of life as did many of the inhabitants of Free Space. The Confederation decided to use newly developed tech to try and explore and hopefully chart Uncharted Space, but, they failed yet again. Bringing the death toll now, into the millions.
When they failed yet again to chart it a long time went on where they just focused on the planets they had. But, Gnosians during The Second Gnosian Rebellion started to strike and raid colonies of The Confederation. Tensions rose and a war began when The Confederation attacked Bon-Allis. Effortlessly they sprang their attack and before Free Space could mount an offensive The Confederation had occupied Bon-Allis and reached Jex, the capital of Free Space.
End Result
It was a long war and in the end, The Confederation failed. Many people were displaced, many people on both sides died, some planets were completely destroyed or rendered uninhabitable. But, The Confederation earned themselves one new planet. Bon-Allis. Some people took to calling the conflict the fight for Bon-Allis, to the embarrassment of the people who started the war.
Gnosians
Just after The Second Gnosian Rebellion and during the war, the Gnosians who were the most war-like of all the Free Space races decided it was a good time to leave. In their droves, they completely abandoned their home-world and went into Uncharted Space, to never re-emerge. Some Confederation colonies though have reported Gnosians raiding their worlds. But, no evidence has ever surfaced.
Some people believe this was because they wanted to expand freely but, weren't allowed. Hence the failed rebellions. No one knows whether or not they were able to find habitable planets out there. But, they are extremely adaptable so most people believe they did.
Conclusion
One of the only New Frontiers would be Uncharted Space, but, sadly. It can't be charted because of interferences of tech when beyond the borders.
