This is such a cool story. I love ones like that, artifacts/ old ruins left adrift, being explored for the first time in a long time. Environmental storytelling would be perfect for a short story like this: people huddled together, frozen in time, some with an old pistol barrel still in their mouths.

Also, I would have gone in a totally different direction; I would have had them explore and realise that something is there with them, whereas you went in a more hopeful direction that they're going to fix it.
