As humans that go through day-to-day activities which include school, and work, having hobbies are a way to reduce stress and anxiety, they are done for pleasure and enjoyment and we are usually advised to have hobbies.

Now, Just in case you don't know what hobbies are? Well, hobbies to me are activities that are done in your free time and they are usually done voluntarily.

Some hobbies can include running, walking, swimming, playing games, and so on.

Various individuals can have different hobbies that reflect their personality, environments, upbringing, etc, and some hobbies can be turned into a way to earn.

Moving forward, let us dive into minimalism and hobbies, can I be a minimalist and have hobbies, and if yes, how do I go about it?

MINIMALISM AND HOBBIES

As a minimalist that lives a simplistic lifestyle, I believe that having hobbies are necessary because we are humans, and we also need these activities.

Minimalism doesn't prevent us from having normal lives but, personally, I think the only issue we could have with hobbies are having those which would need different gears and clothes.

I feel like that on its own would defeat the purpose of being a minimalist so, due to this, we have to be very intentional with the ones we choose.

MY APPROACH TO HOBBIES

Keeping that in mind, I usually try to do hobbies that do not require me to spend much money, go against my lifestyle, or gather clutter.

Even before I became a minimalist, I was very frugal because I didn't have money so, I tried to always do things that didn't need special gear or clothes.

As someone who experiences anxiety and stress easily, I have a bunch of hobbies that help me mentally, and they include;

  1. Watching movies: This hobby doesn't involve me spending any money or gathering clutter through gears/clothing because I don't pay for any subscription, I usually would use a flash drive to collect movies from my family and friends so, it is cost free.

  2. Singing/ listening to music: Since I only need my voice or my phone to do this, I never gather clutter doing it, for listening to music, I have a Spotify subscription which is paid for by my friend.

  3. Photography, creating content, reading and blogging: These are also hobbies that I do with my phone and the only time I spend on data.

  4. Swimming and Board games: I usually try to go swimming once in a month and I only need a swim truck, I have about two pieces that have lasted me for years.

Now, the only place I spend money and would say I gather clutter is through board games because I have a bunch of them and they can be pricey, but they last a long time.

I am trying in this area to play more games on my phone instead so I don't have much clutter but, I also hate having so many apps on my phone so that is where I have a problem.

FINALLY,

Having hobbies does take constant checking of yourself because it can easily generate clutter and affect simplistic living but, if we are mindful, we can have a balance in our lives.

We can intentionally choose hobbies that don't require clutter and we can also reduce the number of hobbies we have depending on how they reflect our lifestyle.
