As a Nigerian, the one food that almost everyone eats in this country is rice, and usually, before now, rice was imported but, since a ban was placed on foreign products, it has made foreign rice expensive; as if that is our problem here.
Now, due to the high cost of foreign rice in Nigeria, there have been a lot of local brands popping up left and right; some good, some bad.
Because of this, for the longest time, my mother has been trying to still buy good enough rice for the house because some of the local rice are very dirty, and she had been successful until recently.
A few weeks ago, my mom brought rice home and I was pretty excited because as a picky eater, rice is one of the only foods I could eat, so, immediately, I went into wife material mood.
The first food that came into my head was to cook Jollof rice and I began prepping the ingredients while dancing around to some afrobeat.
I look at the rice and it looked good, so I went ahead with my normal routine, cooked the rice, and even got drinks for everyone at home.
I served the food for everyone and we started eating while watching movies and everything was going fine until I heard the sound “krup” coming from my mother.
All eyes turned to her and we quickly figured that she had eaten a stone which chipped her teeth but it was probably just a mistake or so we thought.
We went on eating, and one after the other we started hearing sounds left and right and it made us realize that we were not just eating rice but rice filled with stone and we couldn't fish them out because of how tiny they were.
We had to choose between dumping the whole pot and just eating the food and everyone picked the latter because it was Jollof rice so, we spent the rest of our meal eating in slow motion and trying to fish the stones out with our tongues.
Trust me when I say that we did a bad job at that and the next day, we had to go to the dentist because we had chipped so many of our teeth but, it was worth it for Jollof rice.
