While Toning does not detract from a coin's grade, it certainly adds a different eye appeal to a coin depending on the often random nature of toning. Coins that have been stored in those old paper rolls yield lovely results beginning with the darkened edges and gradually to a golden hue at the center. I learned this at a coin show years ago as a dealer opened up a roll of uncirculated silver halves.
