Do you feel compelled to agree with friends on everything?
I genuinely think it's weird for people to get into a relationship where they are not allowed to disagree with each other. I've not been in a lot of such relationships so I don't exactly have a clue of what it feels like, but I know for a fact that I disagree with some of my mates on a couple of things.
A relatively recent example would be that of a really good friend of mine back in my University days. He's the type of guy that is very different from me. Our personality, taste and mind go in the opposite direction. We can walk down to the pooling booth and effectively cancel out each other's votes. He vote A, I vote B and it didn't leave any crack in our relationship.
While it may arguably be better to be surrounded by people that share the same thought with you and agree with you on everything, I genuinely believe it's also good to have people around who are free to disagree with you on certain things. The same goes for you. If you feel compelled to agree with someone to avoid ruining your relationship with them, it shows that there are questions to be raised about the relationship.
Those in such relationships will end up falling victim to the psychological false consensus effect.
It gets more interesting when they go to places like dating Apps. They outrightly go searching for someone that enjoys Apple on Pizza or someone that thinks football is the best sport in the world or someone that hates the government... Just to be with someone that shares the same opinion as them.
Y'all, does it work?
You'd know that even as a Crypto maximalist, your best mates may not have any interest in cryptocurrency.
To be fair, different people have different dynamics and it's never a surprise for people to look at life in a very different way. Our ability to respect people's points of view is an important element of our relationships.
Interestingly, even when the superficial appears to be very different, when you get to know more about people, you will start seeing loads of areas where your interests overlap.
The bottom line is; do not be afraid to surround yourself with people who may not share the same interest as you. Don't force anyone to agree with you on anything and don't force yourself to agree with anyone on anything.
We've all got differences and we can still be us and maintain go relationships with others.
Thanks For Not Missing Any Full-stop Or Comma.
