imo:
What I see up there are aka "wandering stars".
Even when zoomed in on with powerful telescopes, what we see are flickering balls of light. Light can actually be produced with high frequency sound waves too, most people don't know that anymore. It's called sonoluminescence. The extremely high frequencies cannot be heard by our ears of course (we only hear 2Hz to 20KHz iirc).
Anyway, the firmament over our heads has been breached before, hence the 1000's of carvings, etchings, drawings and paintings etc found all over the world.
Personally, my guess is that the "milky way" was probably where the water from the last worldwide flood came from. I think @ericdubay explains these theories much better tho.
