My lover's not here, and I'm alone
His absence makes my heart weary
I search for him desperately,
Oh sun, do not set yet, I pray

My heart beats like the local drums,
In unbalanced rhythm
Through streams and forests, I run
Oh sun, do not set yet, I pray

I leave behind my slippers,
My hair's in total disarray
Desperate to find my love,
I'll search for him, come what may

His strong shoulders bear the worries
Of our hearth that I cannot weigh,
He must return before it's dark
Oh sun, do not set yet, I pray

But he lingers, and my patience is tried,
Past the time my heart can endure
I chant his name, like an oath to obey
I'll search for him, come what may

Oh sun, wait a while for his sake
So your light makes his path straight,
He must not miss his way
To my heart and my hearth.

I hope you enjoyed this short hybrid poem, a fusion of ballad and sonnet. I know the interpretation is open to every reader but here's my take on it. It did not start as a love poem when I was writing. Actually, I was inspired by the image of a wall clock and its ticking hands.

The urgency in this poem is written to correlate with the rising and setting of the sun. It reflects the urgency and longing that comes with the knowledge that time waits for no one. We, as slaves to time, must dance to its tune (ticking) and fall in obedience to its dictates, pursuing it like a lover after her lost love.

While some may see this poem as a love ballad, it is truly a reflection on the fleeting nature of time and the urgency it creates in our lives. But whatever message or inspiration you get from reading this poem, know it's valid as well!
