When I see kids today who are already very good at using computers even while they’re still in elementary school, I can’t help but realize how different this generation is. Technology has become such an important part of everyday life that if you don’t know how to use a computer, you can easily feel left behind.
I remember when I was in high school, computers were not yet something we commonly used for schoolwork. Whenever we were asked to write a research paper, our main tool was a typewriter. Those who were born in the 1990s and earlier might still remember using one.
While my mom and I were processing some land documents at the Assessor’s Office, I was pleasantly surprised to see a typewriter there. It had been such a long time since I last saw one.
I remember using my grandfather’s typewriter when I was in high school whenever we had to work on research papers. Honestly, using it was quite tiring because you had to press each letter, symbol, and word with some force. It was completely different from today’s keyboards, where typing feels effortless and soft. Back then, every keystroke required a little more effort.
Another thing I remember was how loud it could be, especially when you pressed the keys quickly. But despite the noise and the effort it took to type, there was something fun and satisfying about using a typewriter. Looking back, I really miss those days.
So when I saw the typewriter at the Assessor’s Office, I immediately asked my mom to ask permission if I could take a picture of it. I wanted to capture that little piece of the past and preserve the memory.
Seeing it again reminded me that technology may continue to change, but some old things will always have a special place in our memories. Sometimes, a simple typewriter is enough to take us back to a time we never realized we would miss.
