Oh! You've hit on something that annoys me whenever I'm out walking. In the UK, pedestrians should stay on the left. In the same way that drivers do. Because it means that people nearest the roadside can see oncoming road traffic. Otherwise, you can be walking near the edge of the road and be startled by traffic immediately behind you.

Walking on the left was emphasised during COVID lockdown. With councils spending millions on signs and markings. But people have forgotten. Or maybe Brits just want to break rules? (not me!)

If people stick to the rules, then it makes sense to stand on the right on escalators. So that people walking on them can pass on the left.
