It breaks my heart a little bit whenever we get a new addition at the temples where people have dropped off their unwanted pets to be put into the care of the monks because they no longer want the responsibility of the animal. Every now and then though, some of them just don't make any sense because they are just so sweet and cute and that is the story with "Lek" who stole the hearts of the residents here that named him almost immediately.
This shows that his personality is special, because the monks don't bother to give all of the dogs names but "Lek," which just means "little" got a name almost immediately.
Any abandoned dog is tragic, but every now and then one comes along with such a great personality that it just doesn't make sense how someone could decide that the dog would be too much of a burden to look after.
We were doing a routine food drop-off when "Lek" was pointed out to us and the attitude on this little guy was just immediately amazing. He ran up to me even though we have never met before and was very excited about getting some rubs and love, and I don't think it has set in yet that he has been abandoned and this isn't just a little vacation away from home.
The good news is that Lek is in really good shape and appears to have been well-fed prior to arriving at the temple. It's almost like the owners were really looking after him, and then just decided one day that he is too much trouble.
Those markings on him are temporary and merely are an indication that he hasn't been treated yet. They will wash off easy, it doesn't bother the dog and are not permanent markings or anything like that, just in case anyone is wondering.
He is already extremely well-behaved and totally non-aggressive. He is also very cute and if we could go back in time a few years, I would imagine that he would quickly get snatched up in our adoption program. These days, dogs are not getting adopted very often because a vast majority of our adoptions were to overseas visitors and people still aren't traveling very much. It doesn't help that the USA, which was where a large percentage of our adopted dogs were headed in the past, has recently changed their import rules to make it nearly impossible to send any adopted dogs there.
Lek loves cuddles and doesn't want you to put him down if you pick him up. He is just a really sweet boy and I can't understand how anyone could want to get rid of him. Then again, outside of a few animals with serious attitude problems, I can't understand how any animals could be abandoned.
Thankfully, the monks have already taken a great liking to him, and I am sure he will be well looked after by them and also us. We will treat him with vaccinations and anti-parasite treatment on our next trip.
