Anyone that follows our progress realizes that we have two main goals here at Krabi Animal Welfore.
1st - sterilization of the stray dog and cat population of Krabi
2nd - easing the suffering caused mostly by parasites and skin conditions
Recently we started a new project at a temple complex called "Krabi Noi" (this is not the official but rather the colloquial name of the temple in the center of Muang, Krabi.)
One particular pup that broke our hearts because it was using bags of trash under a tree to protect itself from the rain was featured a few blog entries ago. We were able to administer Bravecto, a broad-spectrum anti-parasite edible treatment that is the best value for the money that we can find in our part of the world.
After facing a lifetime of neglect and / or abuse this little angel was still very friendly and approachable. The monks at the temple had been doing the best that they could to look after it and the many other dogs that reside on the temple grounds but this almost never includes any sort of medical intervention. We are happy that they do what they do in the way of providing food but we are also happy to step in and assist in making this situation even better.
Sterilization of course is the most important thing because since it is a bit of a tradition to drop off unwanted animals at temples in exchange for what is meant to be a life-long financial contribution to the same temple, these dogs, like any dogs on the planet, have a tendency to replicate in rapid succession. The situation becomes untenable and normally the animals do not live very long lives. They are also usually in a very bad state as far as skin condition and parasite infection is concerned.
While we did not decide to name this poor creature we did administer Bravecto (again, a broad-spectrum parasite prevention medication) and in just 4 weeks time the change in the overall look of this same pup is just amazing and is just more reason why it is that we do what we do.
If I didn't tell you so, would you even believe that this is the same dog? Her recovery from her horrible infestation of fleas, ticks, and mange has been almost completely reversed by a single dose of this wonderful product that costs only about 12 USD for a 4 month treatment. The idea is that by treating every dog on the premises (which is what we do) is that the parasites themselves will eventually slow down their progression since there is a much lessor opportunity for them to travel from one dog to the next. The difficult part is getting all the dogs treated and not accidentally treating them twice. Doing so is not necessarily dangerous, but due to our very limited funds it would be very wasteful.
