For those of you out there that think as I do, you tend to have a great deal of sympathy towards animals and in particular, dogs. I have a hard time understanding people that don't feel a great deal of compassion towards dogs but there are some out there.

I think that this feeling of love towards our 4-legged friends extends even further once we start talking about puppies and this young fella that was recently pointed out to us has a broken leg.

The resiliency of dogs is pretty incredible, because even though his leg is broken he still manages to hobble around a bit and he was pointed out to us by the monks at a local temple. When we asked if he had been there for long they said they were not sure but they think someone dropped it off there.

In Thailand, when a dog ends up with broken limbs it is almost always because they have been struck by a vehicle. The chaos that are the roads in Thailand is only part of the problem though, and that is another story. The real reason why stray animals are hit by vehicles so often in this country is because there are entirely too many stray and homeless dogs. Most of the time when they are crossing the streets it is in the pursuit of food.

So the guess on the part of the monks is that someone dropped the pup off after it was discovered hobbling around somewhere. Dropping unwanted dogs off at temples is a very common practice in this country and at least the monks do the best they can to provide some semblance of a life for them.

They are not, however, veterinarians, and we have met very few that even understand what we consider to be simple medical care of the dogs and cats that end up there. No one should expect them to. The fact that they provide as much food and shelter as possible warrants a great deal of praise already.

We haven't gotten the test and x-ray results back yet but from an initial consultation, the veterinarians that we deal with are thinking that surgery will be necessary for the bone to set properly.

Even though we do not have the funds necessary to take this one right now we are going to do our best, even if I must dig (yet again) into my own salary I get from my teaching job.

How could I possibly say no to that face?

So we have our fingers crossed that just a simple cast is all that will be necessary but we will do whatever is necessary to heal this little pup up. It's tragic whenever a dog ends up harmed by the harsh elements that are the homelessness of living in Thailand, but when it's a pup that has only been around for an estimated 3 months, it is even more heartbreaking.
