Making decisions is hard! Especially those big ones.
I often find myself feeling rather overwhelmed when I have to make a decision about something because there is always that emotional side And the more logical side. Fighting against each other to pick the perfect choice. The choice that will not only make me happy in the short term But also make my life better in the long term.
Sometimes when we really can't make a decision, It's our emotional side that is making it hard.
The fear of the risk of the decision, The emotions we have associated with each choice.
It's overwhelming.
When you look at your decision from another point of view, Such as a friend point of view. You can gain a better understanding of what is really at stake in the situation.
You can see it for what it is. And ignore all those feelings associated with the overall decision.
So pretend that your friend is trying to make this tough decision. And make it for them.
That is probably the decision you should be making.
A friend of mine, That I still don't know well, Really wants to get me out of my comfort zone. He suggested something that would definitely make me feel awkward in every way.
Of course, immediately my brain started spawning reasons why it's a bad idea.
This is really common these days, We get sad because we are lonely and want to be out with people. But once it gets to the point we actually have to go out and meet those people. We get scared and look for excuses to back out.
It will ALWAYS be easier to stay home.
It will ALWAYS be easier to just cancel.
But often when we do that, we are missing out on something wonderful.
So Instead of saying "no". I said yes. And now my brain is in panic mode trying to figure out how I'll be able to go with the least amount of uncomfortableness.
But the thing is, Going and potentially embarrassing myself, Is better than not pursuing the opportunity at all.
We tend to avoid risk even when things ARE in our favor.
Because the chance of what could potentially be lost, Or broken just scares us that much.
Sometimes changes also scare us into making more safe decisions.
We often become attached to certain things, Our way of life. Our old car. Whatever it is, causes us to lean towards the decisions that will keep our lives the same, Rather than give us a massive upgrade.
I have this issue at times with my job. I use my part-time job to work out and lose weight, But I know at the end of the day If I continue working there. I will lose everything I tried so hard to build. All of my work being self-employed.
So at some point, I will have to quit, Despite me loving the job and my coworkers.
It's a scary situation, And things are IN MY FAVOR. If I leave. I already have a lot of income coming in, That I can live comfortably without the job.
But still, the risk of losing my friends, and the job I enjoy, Is partially causing me to self-sabotage my success in some ways. I find myself slacking, Or procrastinating.
When you become aware of something you are more likely to fix the issue.
So when you are making decisions based on fear, Or intimidation. Recongnize it. That way moving forward you can address the real issue, The fear. Instead of the thing that you THINK Is the fear - The decision.
