Media Bias

The election of DJ Trump focused attention on the media, media bias and manipulation. It highlighted how news can be targeted to specific groups. It's not neutral. Many years ago, I did a journalism unit as part of my BA. Unless we were writing an opinion piece, the news was meant to be factual - who, what, when, where, how and where appropriate, why. Okay. Newspapers and other media outlets package audiences into specific demographics for advertisers. Steemit is shaping up to be a rival to facebook. Of my own practice, this has become more true. I was actively turning away from facebook because I had noticed that the news it was filtering to my page had become increasingly virulent - and with an increasingly left-wing slant, that had grown tiresome. I may be left-wing, but I like balance. Steemit has more intellectual content than facebook. I can search Steemit for articles I'd like to read. This isn't available through facebook. You can scroll through ad nauseum looking for interesting content and find it lacking. With Steemit, what I like is how polite and supportive Steemians are to fellow contributors. My favourite thing about facebook, and the reason I joined is because of the links to family, the photos of events you can't be present at. A major advantage, if you live at a distance from family, you can keep up, so that when you do see each other at Christmas or birthdays, you're not so out of the loop. But this sort of engagement, wherein you can access a wide range of information and interact with contributors on multiple topics isn't possible on a site like facebook. The creek is at my place.
