The Hiccup is one of the most common and annoying disorders that exist.

What is hiccup occurs when the diaphragm, the muscle at the base of the lungs, contracts involuntarily. When the diaphragm suddenly contracts between normal breaths, an episode of hiccups appears and, simultaneously, the vocal cords close rapidly, causing a characteristic sound.
As a consequence, hiccups produce interrupted and violent breathing accompanied by annoying noise.
The doubts that appear when you suffer a crisis of this type are multiple. Hiccup, which is also known technically as singulto, can vary according to its duration and causes. Despite the numerous tricks that have been extended to eliminate hiccups, there is no magic formula to alleviate a problem that usually has no clinical relevance.

Causes

• Having an upset stomach or throat.
• Having diseases that irritate these nerves, such as pneumonia or pleurisy.

It can also occur due to certain problems of the esophagus, the pressure exerted on the stomach, the intake of spicy foods, the existence of surgery in the abdomen or a stroke or a tumor that affects the brain.

History

The Greek physician Hippocrates (460 BC-370 BC) in his aphorisms mentioned hiccups and warned about their possible severity: convulsions or hiccups after excessive bleeding, seizures or hiccups are serious symptoms. they reach an excessive purge, they are fatal. In inflammation of the liver, hiccups are a bad symptom.

Galen (131-201), another great doctor of antiquity, stated that the hiccups were caused by violent emotions of the stomach, near the diaphragm.

In the 20th century, knowledge of hiccups increased due to the discovery of the importance of phrenic nerve stimulation in its appearance, described by Thomas Shortt in 1833. In 1943, Hamilton Bailey was the first to consider hypo as a reflex movement composed of an afferent pathway through the vagus nerve, a nerve center in the cervical spinal cord and an efferent pathway corresponding to the phrenic nerve. In spite of everything, the importance of the phenomenon is not completely clarified at the present time and several theories exist that explain their possible meaning.

Techniques to cure hiccups

There are no definitive tricks to solve a hiccup episode.

Some people manage to stop the crisis by breathing slowly and deeply into a paper bag ten times at a time, a method that serves to relax the diaphragm. Another way to cure hiccups is to drink a glass of cold water, hold your breath or hold a spoonful of sugar in your mouth and then swallow it.

Other stimuli that could be useful are sneezing or tongue traction.

When hiccups are caused by a more serious medical condition, specialists may recommend the administration of medications that cause distention in the stomach and central suppression of the vomiting reflex or other drugs.

There are not many current studies on the hypo crisis or on the most appropriate treatments, but in the episodes that continue over time, it is important to consult a doctor to stop the problem as soon as possible. Otherwise, hiccups can affect us when we eat, sleep or breathe normally.
