Our lives are mirrored in the dreams we have, our dreams are mirrored in life. The first psychologists, Jung and Freud, both had significant theories based on their view of dreams. Freud seeing our urges and desires, repressed and hidden from ourselves getting loose in the night as symbolic images of our animalistic urges. Jung seeing it as self healing and the soul's attempt to bring wholeness to the ego and the self.
I never was much interested in psychology and I never really could see dreams as nightly healing or a mental pressure relief valve. When I was younger I despised psychology. I said that only Hollywood really had had any benefit from these theories. Later on I have lightened up a bit on the negativity. There was a lot of crazy imagination in the whole movement and not least in the two above mentioned gentlemen. So much wild thinking was set free and things happened when those upper middle and upper class persons did the dream analysis on themselves. Thinkers like Bataille or Adorno were dilettante dream analysts for example :) Art emerged from it, thinking emerged from it.
The thing is... I was never in doubt if my dreams had psychological elements from my awake life. It has always been almost banal to me. Psychological nightmares can be nasty, but not because they seems mysterious. I'd say: on the contrary.
