Miles Canyon, Yukon, Canada
Just outside the town of Whitehorse, we came across this canyon.
Formed around 9 million years ago, made up of basaltic lava flows and cones that erupted and flowed in this area. The Yukon River is squeezed into this narrow passage, and the water is swift moving.
The canyon has been tamed by a hydro-electric dam built at......
the end of the canyon, to power the town of Whitehorse. This raised the water level 30' and eliminated the rapids.
During the Klondike goldrush, hundreds of boats ran through the fast moving water and 60' high cliffs. It would of been quite a thrill, and after numerous accidents and loss of life the RCMP set up a station to check any boats before they ran the rapids.
Any boat they deemed unfit, then the people and goods would be .......
put on a tram that ran along the bank to avoid the rapids.
First Nations people have been visiting the area for thousands of years, as salmon would pool at both ends of the canyon, resting before......
and after the arduous journey.

an enjoyable way to spend a day. Just downriver is a reservoir created by the dam and a float plane base if you like to do some aerial sightseeing, or a fly in camping or fishing trip..... .....Thank you for joining us on this adventure.
