Welcome to the Ghost Town of Haynes, Arizona, USA.
This was my first ghost town I have ever visited and it did not disappoint.
In 1890, the Haynes Copper Company dug a shaft over 1200' deep...
looking for copper. They found none.
However they did find gold and the boom was on. Eventually over 300 people lived in the town and as the gold dried up, so did the population.
Today it is an open air museum, with a number of houses, buildings and remenants of a bygone age. There is something for everyone here.
An area for gold panning, petting animals, pigs, goats, rabbits, chickens. A general store, a working saw mill and too many vehicles to count.
The buildings themselves are full of artifacts and items, there is an old schoolhouse, dental office and numerous others.
The site was rediscovered in 1981 by Terry and Don Robertson, who developed, and brought in some buildings and made the abandoned town into a commercial venture. They did an excellent job.
Walking through town is like walking back in time.
Only a few minutes from the town of Jerome, Arizona, which is an interesting and well worth the visit, and worthy of it's own post.
We spent the better part of the day, checking out the mining machinery and vehicles, and trying to figure out the uses of some equipment.
Absolutely a must see if in the area of Arizona.
