It's the largest member of the Kingfisher family, weighing in at nearly a pound (approx 450 grams.) A sedentary bird, this one sat in a gum tree ready to swoop down when a delicious meal appeared. They eat a wide variety of prey including insects, small lizards, worms, and mice.
The Laughing Kookaburra is native to eastern Australia and was introduced to western Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. It inhabits dry eucalyptus forest and woodlands.
Their distinct call, sounding somewhat like laughter, has been used as a substitute for distant monkeys in jungle movie soundtracks. The Kookaburra was immortalized in the old children's song, "Kookaburra."
