What a coincidence! I just learned this new word: stopover from Teacher Mike yesterday. Below is his explanation in details:

A layover is the stop (less than 24 hours) between two flights.
A stop of more than 24 hours is called stopover.

Ok, it seems it is not too bad yet since a 17-hour stopover(less than 24 hours)should still be a layover. (Forgive my poor joke. 17-hours is really a long time in the airport, which should be just the reason why the ticket is so cheap. )

However, my real question is how to understand your sentence:

while trying to do my best not to paint the blue and yellow interiors of Ryanair's magnificent airbuses a beautiful chartreuse, or maybe a calming Lilac with overtones of Mauve.

I am rather puzzled. Why and how to change the color of the interiors of the plane？Maybe here you mean the Ryanair flight would be very boring so that people could go crazy in it, ok？
