Yesterday I was talking with a friend about the economy, being Mexican, he had a picture of how the economy was going. However I had a very different one, it wasn't as pessimistic as him. But is true, that I didn't know all the numbers for sure, and more to it, I didn't know the regional numbers in Latin America. I usually love this topics as just like you would do with when analyzing a company to invest in, you can do the same with a country.
Periodical economic reports are available and people that know where to find it, were pretty knowledgeable and skillful. However with AI, that opportunity is at anyone's fingertip. Having a conversation with AI, will allow you to discover the data relevant to build a more clear picture of what's going on and how you should tackle the beliefs that many people have, and if they actually did a research or are just repeating someone else narrative.
This is what I thank AI, which is the option of verifying your information quick and easy. Also to do deeper research for a more complete view of different situations. In general, I was able to come with three main economic data:
Economic growth
Employment numbers
Inflation rate
Once I had that data, I would compare it with key economies like Brazil, Colombia and Argentina. Also do major comparison with the average of all the other economies when available. This will give us at least some outlook on how solid or fragile is the Mexican economy compared to the rest of the region.
The first thing I looked for was economic growth. I first wanted to know the growth of the third trimester. If you didn't know, the year is divided into 4 trimesters of reporting. This will allow a relatively recent view of how the country is doing as far as it's total economy. From then, you can go into sectors like agro, industrial and services.
Then is the employment numbers, whenever there are enough jobs and if these jobs are increasing, will show you the trend of the economy in the next few months. This is a bit more relevant to the regular people, as is closer to what the people that are able to work can look for.
Finally the inflation is a measure on how solid the economy is facing the challenge of scarcity, as products become more expensive to produce or transport and people have or need more money to buy the same amount of products, like food, transportation, etc.
These are my findings:
| Concept | Mexico | Brazil | Colombia | Latin America |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2nd quarter growth | +2.1% | +2.0% | +3.5% | +2.0% |
| Employment figures | -3% | -5.2% | -8.5% | +6% |
| Inflation | +3.45% | +4.58% | +6.29% | +5.4% |
These key indicators draw a better picture of what's going on. I would then go into learning more about the key columnist for financial information like Bloomberg or 'El Financiero' which would do deeper analysis on the economy. The AI is a great resource to learn the names of them, their angle and which of their columns talk about this. AI identify for me these people to follow:
Bloomberg
Juan Pablo Spinetto
Pablo Balcáceres
Jonathan Levin
El Financiero
Enrique Quintana
Jonathan Ruiz Torre
Gabriel Casillas
Macario Schettino
Carlos Serrano Herrera
This helps me guide and measure the overall consensus around specialists and drive some consensus between different parties and which is the more prevalent narrative about the economy. In the end this technique could be very useful for anyone trying to do research on something like the economy of a country. Even if you don't live there, you could get with AI all the information from local thought leaders and also get the nuances and climate that is being experienced withing the targeted country.
I could also research this on the other countries like Colombia or Brasil but I think for now, this would be a good enough information to draw a conclusion on things.
