The new KDE 6.8 is around the corner and here is a video explaining the new fixes and features from the upcoming release.

I am personally excited about the new features and fixes that Plasma 6.8 is bringing and hope to try it soon. It's meant to be released next week and some of the fixes are substantial specially the ones with Wayland, and Nvidia. Here is the list if you want a summary list of them.

Main Bug Fixes

  • Nvidia Window Staggering Lag: Fixed an issue where snapping or styling windows side-by-side could become laggy or stuttery on certain Nvidia cards using proprietary drivers [01:25].

  • Flatpak Automatic Updates: Fixed a bug in the Discover app store where automatic updates for Flatpak apps would occasionally fail to apply [02:14].

  • KRunner Keyboard Navigation: Improved arrow key navigation and resolved a long-standing bug with the Tab key when browsing search results [03:24].

  • Slow Keys Accessibility Bug: Fixed an issue where key repeat behavior malfunctioned when the accessibility "slow keys" setting was enabled [04:14].

  • Weather Widget Empty Box: The weather report widget now displays a clear message when it fails to fetch data instead of showing a blank square [05:07].

  • Plasma 6.7.6 & Frameworks 6.32 Fixes: Resolved an issue displaying phantom keyboard backlight controls on unsupported keyboards and prevented a potential crash in apps using the blur effect [05:36].

Major New Features & Changes

  • Nvidia Triple Buffering: Enables triple buffering by default for Nvidia cards to help make animations feel smoother [01:54].

  • Backup Tool (Kup): The Kup backup utility is now officially part of the Plasma project to help automate external drive backups [06:14].

  • Union Styling Preview: Introduced a preview of a new system for app styling, initially supporting core apps like Dolphin and Kate [06:33].

  • Performance Boosts: Delivers higher quality and lower delay screen recording, faster desktop loading times, and reduced graphics memory usage [06:48].

  • Wayland-Only Session: Plasma 6.8 completely drops the old X11 session at login, making Wayland the default and sole session type [07:02].

As an Arch User the new KDE would be released as soon as is pushed into the release repo. Check your distro for announcements on when will it be released.
