Environmental sanitation is the process of improving the quality of the natural environment by preventing or reducing the contamination of water, air, soil, and food by harmful substances or energy. Environmental sanitation is essential for protecting human health and well-being, as well as preserving the biodiversity and ecosystems that support life on earth.

Environmental sanitation involves various activities and measures, such as:
Providing safe and adequate water supply and sanitation services, such as piped water, boreholes, wells, latrines, septic tanks, and sewerage systems. These services help to prevent the transmission of waterborne diseases, such as diarrhoea, cholera, typhoid, and dysentery, which are among the leading causes of death and illness in developing countries.

  • Treating and disposing of wastewater and excreta safely and effectively, using technologies such as filtration, chlorination, disinfection, composting, and biogas production. These technologies help to reduce the pollution of surface and groundwater sources, and to recover valuable resources, such as water, nutrients, energy, and organic matter, for reuse in agriculture, industry, or households.
  • Managing and reducing solid waste, such as household garbage, industrial waste, medical waste, and electronic waste, using methods such as segregation, collection, recycling, incineration, and landfilling. These methods help to prevent the accumulation of waste in the environment, and to minimize the negative impacts of waste on human health and the environment, such as odour, vermin, fire, leachate, greenhouse gas emissions, and toxic substances.
  • Controlling and monitoring air pollution, such as smoke, dust, fumes, gases, and aerosols, from various sources, such as vehicles, factories, power plants, and fires. These sources emit pollutants that can affect the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, the nervous system, and the immune system, and can cause diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, lung cancer, and stroke. Air pollution can also damage the ozone layer, which protects the earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation, and contribute to climate change, which affects the weather patterns, the sea level, and the natural disasters.
  • Promoting and enforcing environmental laws and regulations, such as standards, guidelines, permits, inspections, penalties, and incentives, that aim to prevent, reduce, or mitigate the environmental pollution and its effects on human health and the environment. These laws and regulations also encourage the participation and cooperation of various stakeholders, such as governments, communities, industries, and civil society, in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of environmental sanitation programs and projects.

Environmental sanitation is not only a technical or a legal issue, but also a social and a cultural issue. It requires the awareness, education, and empowerment of the people, especially the poor and the marginalized, who are most affected by the environmental pollution and its consequences. It also requires the integration and coordination of different sectors and disciplines, such as health, water, agriculture, energy, and education, to achieve a holistic and sustainable approach to environmental sanitation.

Environmental sanitation is not an impossible or a hopeless task. It is a feasible and a worthwhile goal that can bring positive and lasting changes for ourselves and future generations.
