ENGLISH VERSION (click here!)

Friends of hive, about nine or ten months ago I bought some malangas at the farmer's market. The clerk had some malanguitas set aside in a corner because they were starting to sprout new shoots. I told him to sell me two or three of those and the man gave me three, because he also wanted to plant his own. So I went home with that idea.

I arrived at once in a hurry to plant some malanga plants, because I confess I have a tremendous plot of land that is not yet fully exploited. We have coconuts, guavas, guanábanas, bananas, but there is still room for more. Anyway, I planted those sprouts and every now and then I watered them and cleaned them of weeds.

Then every time I have gone to buy malangas I have repeated the practice. So maticas of different ages proliferate in my yard. Although they don't look uniformly planted, they will be useful someday. I had almost forgotten my first planting, because I am coming home very late, working at my mother's house.

Today, when I didn't have to go out, I decided to check in the yard and I was astonished, I found some very big bushes already showing what is called yam and it seemed to me that it was ready to be taken out. Anyway, I asked the neighbor who is an expert in the matter and he told me that in his opinion they were ready to be consumed. I thought I would remove one bush and leave the other two for another day and so I did.

I quickly looked for a tool to open the hole around without damaging the fruit of my work. A small guataca was my help and what a surprise, I found many malangas ready to eat and these did not cost a single peso. My wife was at work at the university, so I wanted to get a head start on peeling and cooking them to save her money. When I checked the kitchen viandero I happily checked that we had pumpkin and sweet potatoes and so I decided to plant a pot to make ajiaco, although I had no idea how to make such a meal, it didn't seem difficult.

I consulted with my wife the steps for its elaboration and she told me to put Congo, Carabali, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic. I said to her in astonishment: "What are you talking about, girl?" and she told me on the other side of the phone, choking with laughter, that this was Don Fernando Ortiz's ajiaco. That is Cuban culture, a thick broth with ingredients from all continents. What a mess this teacher made for me. Well, she gave me some instructions that I assumed as best I could. I think I invented a little.

I can tell you that I made a broth with viands, seasoning, chicken and tomato puree that turned out great, with a smell that took the whole house and some neighbors came to see. When the child came home from school he tasted it and ate a full plate. Whoever wants to and can, stop by, the pot still has plenty of ajiaco. Ah, I tell you something, I had some malangas left for a next meal and of course I sowed again, because he who sows reaps something reaps.
