BOOLR Digital Logic Simulator | Exclusive-OR implementation using AND-OR-NOT gates
What is Exclusive-OR?
| Exclusive-OR is a digital logic gate that gives a true (1 or HIGH) output when the number of true inputs is odd. An XOR gate implements an exclusive or; that is, a true output results if one, and only one, of the inputs to the gate is true. If both inputs are false (0/LOW) or both are true, a false output results. In the last tutorials, we use XOR or as the primary gates for adder and subtractor. Now in this tutorial, we will examine how this logical operation is implemented using the basic logic gates-AND, OR and NOT. |

Intended Learning Outcome (What Will I Learn?)
After reading and participating in this tutorial, the readers should be able to:
- learn how to implement an Exclusive -OR logic circuit with the aid of simulation;
- create a digital logic circuit for Exclusive -OR simulation ; and,
- simulate the created Exclusive -OR simulation digital logic circuit.
Requirements
To be able to follow this tutorial, you should have the following tools at hand:
- A desktop PC or laptop with Windows (7, 8, 10) operating system; and,
- A BOOLR latest release version which you can download at its Github repository GGBRW/BOOLR or vist its website at boolr.me
Difficulty
- Intermediate
Part 1: Setting up a new project the BOOLR app.
1 | Open BOOLR.exe from the downloaded latest release zip file of the app.
2 | Create a new project by clicking NEW BOARD.
Then, you will be directed to Create New Board where you are ask to type in the name of the new board.
Type in the board name. For this tutorial, lets have " Exclusive -OR " as board name.
3 | Click
| For the basic operations and functions of the BOOLR Digital Logic Simulation, you are advise to read the Introduction to BOOLR. |
|---|
Part 2: Creating a Exclusive-OR Digital Logic Circuit in BOOLR
Now, we create a circuit in the BOOLR for Exclusive-OR which is implemented using AND-OR-NOT gates.
1 | We start by selecting components needed in the simulation. Select NOT gate by clicking
2 | Add AND gate by clicking
4 | Add OR gates after the AND gates.
5 | Select input devices from
6 | Add set of input before the NOT gate.
7 | Add output after the OR gate. To add the component, you need first to enable and click at the location where you want it to add.
8 | Connect input to A to NOT(a) and AND(a) terminal.
9 | Connect input to B to NOT(b) and AND(b) terminal.
10 | Connect the NOT(a) to AND(b). This will set an inverse input A to the AND gate.
11 | Connect the NOT(b) to AND(a). This will set an inverse input B to the AND gate.
12 | Connect remaining terminal to output.
Part 3: Simulation of the created FULL ADDER logic gate
| How does Exclusive-OR works? |
|---|
| Exclusive-OR is a logical circuit that operates in a way that a high(1) values output is achieved when the one of the input is high(1); but not both inputs are high (1). The circuit is composed of: two conventional NOT gate configured in such way that the AND gates will depend on the inverse of the input values; an AND gate that used to isolate a high output when both inputs are high(1); and, OR gate used to determine the exclusivity of the input A and B by detecting a high (1) value for the inputs having one high (1) value. |
1 |Verify the simulation button if it is play or paused. Pause button indicates simulation is going on, while Play button signifies the simulation is paused.By default, the BOOLR app is always on simulation.
2 | Verifying our discussion earlier, input the values. Observe the result at the OUTPUT. To change the values of input, click on the number inside the input symbol.
3 | Change values of input to 1 and 1 respectively. Follow step 2 on how to change the input values.
Result of Simulation: Comparison to the easy to access Exclusive-OR gate Vs AND-OR_NOT Exclusive-OR implementation.
| Exclusive-OR gate | Exclusive-OR implementation using AND-OR-NOT gate |
|---|---|
| For input 0,0 | For input 0,0 |
| For input 1,0 | For input 1,0 |
| For input 0,1 | For input 0,1 |
| For input 1,1 | For input 1,1 |
