The Dell subsidiary considers using Blockchain for data transfers
A subsidiary of the computer giant Dell is seeking to patent a system that uses Blockchain as part of a larger effort to increase the speed of data transfers.
VMWare, the global leader in digital workspace and cloud infrastructure, is behind the application published on November 16 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
The application details a "Blockchain hybrid" approach, which would see computers connected through a distributed network exchanging "tabs" that contain "metadata with information to be transferred".
As the explanation says:
"The token can be transmitted using a blockchain network accessible to the first and second computer systems through a public network. The first one can load the data set one or more storage service addresses in the cloud through the public network, and the second one can download the data in the same way ".
The preference for a chain of public versus an authorized block in which participants are limited is remarkable. The application cites how tokens within that network "can not be faked without having control over most of the computational power in the network", noting this as an area of strength if used as part of a data transfer system.
The application offers insight into how Dell might be looking to potentially apply the technology, but it is not the first move related to the company's intellectual property.
In September 2016, the USPTO published an application of Dell Products focused on the management of computing devices using a distributed ledger.
