I find that getting the underlying structural line work of a drawing to be critical to forming the right foundation for the rest of the image. Once you get that right then its sooth sailing. The rest of the work is just adding in value.
It's taken a long time to improve that line work and I'm still working on it. The more practice I put in the easier it gets to draw those lines with proportionality, contours and weight.
