I am glad you asked... :)

For me it was all about the numbers.

The first being that steemit.com and steem have basically become a POS mining platform. The more stake you have the more you can "keyboard mine".

The ROI on that comes out to around 30% per year on your steem holdings. That number can vary depending on several variables, but that is a good rough estimate starting point.

To me that seems like great selling point to attract investors, the problem is that most people just don't really know about it, outside the few here in our little bubble that is.

Next up, we have prices at two year lows, down in the low $.30's at the time of purchase, which brought the total market cap down just under $100 million which was a point I was feeling more comfortable putting money to work.

Also, based upon my research on patterns, trends, and seasonality in crypto, we are likely heading into a very bullish period for just about all of crypto over the next 1-2 years. I wrote a little more why I believe that in this post:

https://steemit.com/crypto/@jrcornel/5-major-catalysts-on-the-way-for-crypto-could-ignite-a-rally-in-altcoins-including-steem

Finally, I thought it was a good time to invest because we have seen some improvements with steem/steemit in terms of development. We have gotten costs down and are finally generating some revenue, something that I am optimistically hoping means steemit.inc will be selling less steem as we go forward. Plus it makes things much more sustainable overall.

Right now there is a very good reason to purchase steem power, the 30% ROI for keyboard mining, plus if you think about it that also means the majority of the rewards are going to people who have a stake here, not people showing up and posting for free. If downvoting becomes prevalent to the point that you have no idea what/if you can earn on here or not, people won't tie up money in SP, why should they? Instead they will post a bit for free and see if they can catch some lucky upvotes from time to time.

Basically, I think it will transition some of the rewards from those with stake to those with none, which likely is a further drag on prices as those who get rewards for free are likely the first to sell. (I am not arguing that is a terrible thing per say, I am just saying it likely is a drag on prices)

Which is why I think keeping steemit.com as a quasi POS mining/investing layer is probably best for now in terms of demand for steem and steem power and then using SMTs and communities to start rewarding more of the "proof of brain" content.

At least that is how I see it from an investment point of view.

Hope this helps. :)
