Yes, it disturbs a lot when people make a split between Jesus Christ and God as it disturbs when they make a split between Old- and New Testament, which is BOTH God's word as Christ is God too.
It's good you explained this missunderstood when you mentioned 1. John 2:22.
To John 14:28 I've to say what's meant when we say "The Word (God) became flesh" (John 1:14).The name "Jesus" stands for the humanly part, who God had to have for the atoning death and the resurrection after this which redeemed anyone who believe in Christ and to give him his life, during "Christ" stands for the godly part of the Lord, so it was this humanly part who said "I go unto the father:My father is greater than I" (John 1:14).
If you're interrested, I've written a little article which describe why it wouldn't make sense to make a split between Jesus and God (as you've said too) and I would be interested in what you think about it (Title:The reason why Jesus is God).
