Good explanation, specially because all of us are sinners who would deserve the eternal punishment and it's just the Grace of God, which made it possible to escape this thanks to Jesus Christs atoning death.
There're so much "undeserved" chances for any human to accept the Lord Jesus Christ as his savior, so it's the fault of any lost sinner when they decided to refuse him till the end of this limited life (after this it's too late to repent).
Btw, I think it's typical for atheists to think about a sadistic God when they hear about the consequences for a godless life, but the truth is God is good, so he can't accept dirty sin in his clean kingdom, in his nearness (if he could, he wouldn't be good) which has anyone who's not whitewashed through the blood of Christ.
CONCLUSION:Punishment = Separation from God, so people who goes to hell did chose this way themself before they started to regret their choice. It's not God who obsesses them, the eternal separation of his presence is their torture and all of them had a lot chances to chose the eternal nearness to God as opposed to chose the eternal separation.
