It is indeed a polarity planet we're living in, so whenever we strive for one, we automatically reinforce the other. If you feel like a good person only when you're helping others, you esentially ask that there be others who are suffering, so that you could help them.. Not that I'd judge that - it's all part of the play. Because there is no one "other" that is suffering, so that you could help them, it's you on both sides if the coin.

Have you noticed, how the happier you get at any given time, the more drastic the swing-back? One has to be able to withstand both extremes, if one's to go and explore more on either of the sides.
