Robert Louis Stevenson, the writer of novels we have read since our youth, such as Treasure Island, died on December 3, 1894. In his memory and gratitude, this microfiction, elaborated with biographical elements and introducing aspects imagined by me.

These discomforts of my breathing are getting stronger and stronger. Sometimes I would like to abandon myself to them and die in one of so many hemorrhages. I would always like to travel, as I did with my father, but this chronic illness prevents me from doing so. Only writing solaces me and the dream that visits me at night. And those night stories that my nanny (the remembered Cummy) used to tell me come back, full of sinners and their temptations and faults, of abels and cains filling the legends of humanity.

Everything was made from the beginning to be this lookout, scrutinizer of human calms and storms, with my family heritage of lighthouse builders. How I would have wanted to be a lighthouse keeper too! But I ended up being just this writer of adventures and travels, until I entered the most fearsome, the inner adventure, the journey into that "heart of darkness" that my friend Joseph Conrad delved into. The immersion in the horror that we are, that inhabits us, and that we do not recognize, and that awakens strongly by our ambition, by the excess, by the ignorance of our limits.

I was Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, because duality is in us, with or without psychic identity disorders. Having seen it in my dreams and written in that little novel, even though my wife burned the first version, helped me to cope with it. But it always betrays you, like an uncontrollable double.

We must not ignore or avoid evil, wickedness, fear. It is in us, as if when we look in the mirror, next to our apparent frontal image, there also appears another one from behind, which we do not know how it is also in the reflection, and it disturbs us, not knowing what to do.
