It rained a little in my city today both in the morning and at night. For some, this might be pleasant or of no great consequence, but for me, it brought to mind the El Niño phenomenon and the potential consequences it could have for the country. Peru is particularly vulnerable to such events; while not every instance of rain signals an impending emergency, it is hard not to worry when you have already lived through a difficult situation.
Three years ago, I went through a critical experience that I would never want to repeat. My city lacks an adequate drainage system, so heavy rainfall can quickly become a serious problem. I suppose that is why I couldn’t watch the rain today with the same ease as others. I am left with the lingering worry of not knowing what the coming months might bring, and the fear of having to go through something similar again. I truly hope that, this time, conditions do not reach that point and, above all, that the authorities take the necessary measures to prevent situations that could put so many families at risk.
Hoy llovió un poco en mi ciudad, tanto por la mañana como por la noche. Para algunas personas quizás sea algo agradable o sin mayor importancia, pero a mí me hizo pensar en el fenómeno de El Niño y en las consecuencias que puede traer para el país. Perú es especialmente vulnerable a estos eventos y, aunque no toda lluvia significa que vaya a ocurrir una emergencia, es difícil no preocuparse cuando ya has vivido una situación complicada.
Hace tres años pasé por un momento crítico que no quisiera volver a repetir. En mi ciudad no contamos con un sistema de desagüe adecuado, así que las lluvias fuertes pueden convertirse en un problema serio. Supongo que por eso hoy no pude ver la lluvia con la misma tranquilidad que otras personas. Me queda esa preocupación de no saber qué puede pasar en los próximos meses y el temor de volver a vivir algo parecido. Ojalá esta vez las condiciones no lleguen a ese punto y, sobre todo, que las autoridades tomen las medidas necesarias para prevenir situaciones que pueden poner en riesgo a tantas familias.
