We have two new pieces of news from the James Webb space telescope, the first is that it has detected the existence of quartz nanocrystals in the clouds of WASP-17b, a hot Jupiter-type exoplanet, located 1,300 light years from Earth.
This world is very voluminous in size, it is more than seven times larger than Jupiter, but its mass is less than half that of Jupiter, less mass but much more volume, that means that this planet is very little dense and that also means which is very swollen.
All this is because it orbits very close to its star, it receives a lot of heat from it and that is why its temperature is very high, a scorching 1500 Degrees Celsius.
The other news is that the James Webb discovers a new feature in Jupiter's atmosphere, it is a narrow jet stream near the Equator, about 4800 km wide, with winds that I saw traveling at 515 km per hour, which is twice the sustained wind speed of a Category 5 hurricane here on Earth.
This current is located about 40 km above the clouds of Jupiter's lower stratosphere, the main author of the finding is Ricardo Hueso of the University of the Basque Country in Bilbao Spain, said that โthis is something that has totally surprised us. "We have always seen as blurry haze in Jupiter's atmosphere now appear as clear features that we can track along with the planet's rapid rotation," the researcher stated.
This is the power of James Webb, able to see new things in places like Jupiter that we thought we knew well.
