It is easy to get lost following the intricate filaments of this detailed image of the tenuous remnant of supernova Simes 147. Cataloged as Sharpless 2-240, it is also known as the popular nickname of the Spaghetti Nebula. It is observed on the border of the constellations Taurus and Auriga and covers almost 3 degrees or 6 full moons in the sky, that is to say, about 150 light years in the estimated distance of 3,000 light years of the cloud of stellar debris.
The size in the sky of the remains of this supernova is spectacular, in its interior, although not in the center of the remains of the explosion, is the pulsar PSR J0538 + 2817, the nucleus of a massive and extremely concentrated star that rotates at high speed. The nebula expands at a speed of about 100 kilometers per second and appears to have enough energy to emit radiation even on gamma rays.
Recent studies suggest that the star that exploded was a massive star that had a similar star as a companion. When the latter exploded, the mass distribution varied and both were ejected at high speed. That is why the position of the pulsar does not coincide with the geometric center of the supernova remnant, which is displaced just opposite to HD 37424, a giant star that would have shared the central position some 30,000 years ago.
