Part 7 of our Last of Us playthrough picks up some time after the events in episode 6. Henry and Sam, the friends you made while escaping Pittsburgh are dead. Their deaths are still fresh in your mind even though it’s been weeks since that tragic day. You had planned on leaving Ellie with your brother in Wyoming but in the end you couldn’t abandon her like everyone else in her life has. Fight it as you may, you’ve developed a bond you just can’t shake. And at this point you no longer want to.

Almost There

You’ve arrived at the University of Eastern Colorado on horseback. Ellie named the horse Caliss even though you hate that name. Tommy had told you the Firefly lab was located somewhere in the Science Building, a giant glass building you couldn’t miss. You soon notice there isn’t a lot of movement in the area and no signs of people. You pass by an old loading dock with some supplies in it so you head in and look around. Up on a second floor balcony you find an old lookout nest. There’s a chair, some ammo and an observation log. But it doesn’t look like anyone’s been here for some time. Ellie asks about Universities. She asks so people just lived here and studied even though they were all grown up. Study, party, find themselves, figure out what they want to do with their lives you tell her. She doesn’t understand.

Like most places the University campus isn’t in the greatest shape. Buildings are dilapidated and there are makeshift barriers cordoning off areas. You come to a dead end and cut through one of the old buildings. Inside you come across an electric gate that is inoperable but a note nearby says there is a generator used to open the gate. You follow the wires upstairs and take out a small group of infected in the area before starting up the generator. It works, and you get the gate open. As you continue moving through the campus Ellie asks you what you wanted to be. You told her when you were a kid you wanted to be a singer. She asks you to sing something for her. No I don’t think so you say. Aw come on Please. She begs. But you just remain silent.

Campus Life

As you enter a central courtyard you startle a group of monkeys and they run off. She says that was kind of awesome. First time seeing a monkey you ask her. First time seeing a monkey she confirms. Just a bit further along Ellie points to some graffiti on the wall, look Firefly’s, she says. Ellie’s right. It is the Firefly symbol. This is good, she says, first sign of Firefly’s. You come to another electric gate but this time the generator is on the other side and you can’t reach it. You decide to cut through an old dormitory building to see if you can’t find a way through. The dorm is filled with supplies and you are able to fully restock. As you reach the far end of the dorm you see spores billowing up from a hole leading to the basement.

The hole clearly leads to a den of infected but it seems to be the only way to the other side of the building. So you don your gas mask and drop down. In the basement you see a handful of clickers and luckily they haven’t heard you. Slowly and methodically you take them down with impromptu shivs. Before proceeding to the exit you notice a bloater lurking nearby. The bloater appears to be dozing and you’re able to sneak right past it. As you exit the basement and climb the stairs you find a way out into the dorms inner courtyard and the generator. You power it up and open the gate for Ellie and Caliss to come through. It’s pretty much a straight shot to the Science building from here.

Not Looking Promising

Ellie asks why they’d have infected so close to the lab. You tell her Bill used them as a form of defense, maybe they’re doing the same. Yeah I could see that she says. As you reach the Science building you can see an impromptu quarantine zone. There are old military tents, crates and vehicles. It appears to be some sort of emergency or crisis staging area. But it’s empty. Ellie notices it too. No guards, no nothing she says. Yeah I’d expect to see someone by now, let’s get inside you suggest. You move around to the rear of the building and spot an open window up above. You climb up an old delivery truck to get up to it and move inside.

Inside the Science building you still don’t see anyone. Ellie is getting anxious. She starts yelling out yoo-hoo Firefly’s. Cure for mankind over here. Anyone? You tell her to keep it down until you figure out what’s going on. You continue searching the building and come across a bunch of random medical supplies and old classroom things. Ellie says she doesn’t get it, where is everyone? You agree and tell her it seems like they all just packed up and left. Suddenly you hear something smash to the ground from the floor above. Maybe not all of them Ellie says. As you get upstairs you notice a hallway that is cordoned off with tenting material. There are power lines heading down the corridor and a bunch of spotlights. It looks to be some sort of quarantine area.

The Answer to the Question

Before you head into the tented area you hear another crash behind you. You turn to look and one of the portable spotlights falls over. Ellie says uh so it’s probably just clickers right? You say no, clickers don’t hide. You keep moving forward more cautiously. You search through a few more labs and again find nothing that helps you locate the Firefly’s. As you open a door to the next lab you are startled by monkeys who screech at you and runaway knocking over a bunch of things. At least it ain’t clickers you reassure Ellie. Yeah no Firefly’s either she says, well maybe in all that research they turned into fucking monkeys. As you look around you discover the monkeys you have been seeing are lab monkeys the researchers infected with the virus and you learn one of the lab technicians was bit.

That was the beginning of the end for this research lab. In the back of the room you find a corpse with a bullet hole in his skull. Beside him is a data recorder. You play the recording. It turns out this was the researcher who was bit. He chose to die his way instead of turning. The recording mentions that if you are looking for the Firefly’s they’ve all gone to St. Mary’s hospital in Salt Lake City. Do you know where that is Ellie asks? I know the city you tell her. She asks you if it’s far? It ain’t close you say, by horseback. You stop mid-sentence and Ellie see’s the concern on your face. What is it she asks? But then she looks out the window and sees it too, flashlights moving outside. Firefly’s she asks excited.

Uninvited Guests

You pull her to the ground and say get down as a gunshot smashes through the window. Who the fuck are these guys she asks? You tell her it don’t matter we know where we’re going so let’s get the hell out of here. You try to make a break for the exit but it’s too late. They’re already inside. You make good use of a baseball bat you found in the dorm that had nails strapped to it as shivs. That is until you find a better option after relieving an attacker of his hatchet. With hatchet in hand you cleave your way through the rest of them with ease. You’re almost out when another attacker bursts through a door and startles you. He pushes you hard up against a second floor railing overlooking the mezzanine. You wrestle with him but the railing breaks and you both fall.

As you land you are impaled on a piece of rebar. It went straight through your abdomen and it hurts like hell. Ellie climbs down to you and tries to help. You’re bleeding profusely and your vision is starting to blur. You hear some banging and two men smash through a doorway. You pull out your revolver and put one in each of their heads. Ellie asks you what you want her to do. You ask her to pull you up. She helps you to your feet and you start towards the exit. You can barely stand. You’re bleeding out. Ellie tries to help and you keep telling her you’re ok. But she knows you’re not. You fall to the ground and sit back against a desk. A man with a shotgun comes towards you. You try to take aim but can’t.

Luck was Always Going to Run Out

Ellie flanks around the desk and shoots him in the face. She comes back for you and helps you to your feet. She sees your blood all over the desk. As you approach the exit you can barely keep your eyes open. You see more men coming at you. You can’t even lift your revolver. Two more men come running towards you. You try to shoot but you start to pass out. Ellie opens fire. You hear the men yelling the kids got a gun. She takes one of them down but hears a click as she goes to shoot the second. Shit, shit she says as she drops the empty mag and starts reloading. He swings a pipe at her, knocking her to the ground. He rushes in to finish her but she squeezes off three quick rounds and stops him in his tracks.

Ellie comes back to you and helps you up. She’s panicking but hasn’t lost her sense of humor. She says swear to god if I get you out of this you’re so singing for me. You start to cough and wince as you chuckle. You wish you tell her. As you push open the exit door you stumble and fall down the stairs. A man has Caliss by the reigns and is attempting to steal your horse. Before he has time to react Ellie shoots him dead and takes the horse back. She helps you climb onto Caliss and you begin to ride away. A few moments later you get clear of the area but the blood loss becomes too much. You collapse to the ground. Ellie jumps off the horse. She’s crying, pleading with you. Tell me what to do, you got to get up. But you don’t.

Winter

Weeks have gone by and winter has set in over the mountains. Ellie is out in the wilderness hunting for food. She’s killed herself a rabbit with Bills bow. But she knows it won’t last long. As she ties it to Caliss’ saddle she spots a deer in the distance. She begins stalking the deer and gets off a good shot. But the arrow doesn’t kill the deer it only wounds it. She gets off another good shot but the deer runs off. It’s bleeding good now and she is able to follow the blood trail through the bushes. The trail leads to a series of small broken down buildings, maybe an old mill town. She finds the dead deer in an opening and walks over to it. She hears something behind her and spins around drawing her bow.

Who’s there? Come out she yells. Two men come out from behind a tree. The older man in blue jeans and a jean jacket has a rifle slung over his shoulder. He tells Ellie they just want to talk. Any sudden moves and I put one right between your eyes, she tells them, ditto for buddy boy over there. What do you want? The older man introduces himself as David, and the younger man is James. He says they are form a larger group with women and children and they are all very hungry. Ellie lies and says me too. David offers to trade for some of the deer meat and asks what she needs. She says medicine. Antibiotics if they’ve got any. David says they have some back at the camp and says she’s welcome to follow them. Ellie says she’s not following them anywhere.

Uneasy Alliance

Ellie says buddy boy can go get what I need and when he comes back the deer is all yours, anyone else shows up… David finishes her thought, you put one right between my eyes. That’s right she says. David looks at his friend and says two bottles of penicillin and a syringe, make it fast. As James leaves Ellie tells David to hand over his rifle and he does. David says it’ll probably be awhile and suggests they take some shelter from the cold. He builds a fire inside one of the building. David tells Ellie she really shouldn’t be out here alone. She tells him she doesn’t like company. David says whoever’s hurt you clearly care about them, I’m sure it’s going to be just fine. We’ll see she says. Before the conversation gets anymore awkward the infected start to show up.

A clicker rushes towards Ellie and David blasts him with a revolver. Ellie looks at him and yells you had another gun? He smiles and says sorry. David asks for his rifle back as a massive group of infected are moving in. Ellie tells him no you have your revolver. They attempt to barricade the room they’re in but the infected just keep coming and their ammo is running low. David kicks open a door and they run deeper into the old industrial building. After navigating around some clickers Ellie and David cross over an elevated skywalk to another building. The area they reach is a dead end and the infected are swarming. This is where they have to make their last stand.

The Past Catches Up

Ellie scrounges enough supplies to make a couple Molotov cocktails and nail bombs like Bill showed her and together they’re able to fend off the swarm. Afterwards David says they make a good team. Ellie says it was just luck. David tells her there’s no such thing as luck. He says I believe that everything happens for a reason and I can prove it to you. Now, this winter it’s been especially cruel. A few weeks back I sent a group of men out to a nearby town to look for food. Only a few came back. They said the others had been slaughtered by a crazy man. And get this, a crazy man traveling with a little girl. You see everything happens for a reason. Ellie jumps to her feet and draws the rifle on David.

Don’t get upset David says. It’s not your fault, you’re just a kid. He tells James to lower the gun. Ellie spins around and James is standing in the doorway aiming a pistol at her. At first James disagrees but David convinces him to hand over the medicine. Ellie takes the medicine and leaves. David tells her she won’t survive long out here and that he can protect her. No thanks she says. She races back to town and hides Caliss in the garage of an old house. Ellie then heads to the basement. You’re sick and laying on a mattress shivering. She says I was only able to find a bit of food but I got this. She pulls out the penicillin and gives you a shot. She lies down beside you and puts her arm around you. You’re going to make it she says.
