Part 9 of our Middle Earth: Shadow of War playthrough picks up sometime after the events in part 8. After stalking the Warlord’s of Sereghost and their Captains you made your final assault on the fortress. The legendary Overlord Horza the Gentle, a most formidable foe, was bested in his throne room. With the Overlord dispatched you claimed another province of Mordor for the Bright Lord.

A Princess Lost

While inspecting the battlements around Sereghost’s snowy fortress you sense someone is following you. You lead them into an ambush and pounce. To your surprise it’s Baranor. You pick him up off the ground and ask him how he found you? He says it was easy I just followed the trail of dead orcs. You ask of Idril, did she escape Minas Ithil? We were ambushed, I lost her, he explains. Many of our brothers were captured. Some remain in hiding. Sauron’s armies continue to hunt us, he continues. Idril is resourceful but no one survives in Mordor for long, you say. We have a way out, I just need to find her, and whoever’s left, Baranor explains. Then we must find them all, you agree. Together you and Baranor travel to a nearby encampment where some of his men are being held.

You tell him there’s no time for delay and that he’ll find Idril to travel west for a second chance at life. Baranor tells you he has already lived two lives. He was sent to Minas Ithil as a child from a distant land as a peace offering. He says he lived a good life in Minas Ithil and was both respected and happy. But then it fell. Optimistically you tell him, and now you commence your third life. The only life that matters is the one with Idril, he says, but we have to find her first. And that we will, you assure him. After freeing his men in the area, one informs Baranor that Idril is alive. He says, we were on our way to the fighting pits. We were captured but she escaped and if I know Idril that’s where she’s heading.

A Warrior Found

Together you travel to the Sereghost fighting pits to rescue her. But when you arrive you are ambushed by an overwhelming force. You nearly fall when Idril arrives with back up and rescue’s the both of you. When the fighting ends, Idril and Baranor are elated to see each other. Baranor tells her he searched everywhere for her and offers to escort her to safety. But Idril says no, I’m not leaving Mordor, not until all of our brothers are free. Baranor dismisses her, come now we will speak of this later. But she stands her ground, my father sacrificed all of Minas Ithil for my safety. I will not be protected any longer. Not by you, not by anyone. Idril you will die out here, he says. Then that is my fate but I am staying. Go, go, reinforcements will be here soon. We will meet again, she claims.

As they depart Celebrimbor remarks, she’s a true warrior, she fears nothing anymore. Yes that’s the problem, you reply. Some days later you track Idril down outside another Uruk encampment. She seeks a nearby Captain who holds a stolen artifact from Minas Ithil. Her plan is to poison the grog barrels to draw him out and you agree to help. With the entire camp poisoned before the fighting begins you quickly subdue your foes. After the Captain is slain and the treasure reclaimed Idril smiles and says that was one of our more successful missions gravewalker. You reply I can hardly remember the scared young soldier I met in the lower city. She laughs, you mean the one that saved your life from that Captain? You smile and nod, that’s the one. After she leaves you set out to check up on Baranor.

A Bond Stronger than Fellowship

You find Baranor outside an Uruk fort in the mountains. He has found more of his captured men. You split up to cover more ground and enter the fort. Again you find this is a trap. But not for you, after clearing the fort you realize Baranor is missing. He has been captured and taken prisoner. Instead of killing him the Dark Lord’s forces have taken him to a fort in the province of Gorgoroth. There at the base of Mount Doom the Gondorian prisoners are being tortured relentlessly for information. Without delay you travel to the outpost to rescue your friend and ally. As you search the outpost you find two Captains interrogating Baranor. They are looking for the location of the rest of his army but he is not breaking. He will never betray his people.

As you engage the Uruk Captains, Idril arrives with a force of her own. You battle hard and cut down the Dark Lord’s forces. When the Uruk’s are dead and the current threat is gone, you free Baranor and the other Gondorians. Idril rushes to meet him, you’re injured she frets, as she gently places her hand to his breastplate. His heart warms to see her. It’s nothing, you saved us. Again, he says. She looks deeply into his eyes and tells him you’re right, staying in Mordor is certain doom but I cannot leave. My lady, Baranor says, then we will be doomed together. With that they depart with their troops in search of the rest for their soldiers. This time you sense you will not see them again.
