An Ancient Evil

Whispers in the wind warn of a powerful necromancer. His name is Zog the Eternal and he’s in Gorgoroth. He and his fanatical cult are preparing a dark ritual to call forth Tar-Goroth, an ancient Balrog, from the depths of flame beneath Mount Doom. Celebrimbor warns you they are summoning death, but it will be death for all. You travel to the ritual site to stop the summoning and to kill Zog and his acolytes. When you face him, Zog mocks you and explains it was the forging of Celebrimbor’s new ring that awoke Tar-Goroth in the first place. You battle him and his minions along the edge of a great abyss. But before you can defeat him he promises to wake all the dead of Mordor to rise up against you. And with that, he vanishes without a trace.

Although valiant, your actions come too late. From the great depths of the abyss Tor-Goroth rises from the flames. Fools no one can tame a Balrog, Celebrimbor yells. As you look on in horror at the ancient demon you call to Celebimbor, this foe is beyond us! Not with the spirit of Carnan at our side, he smiles. Just then a gust of wind and leaves storms into the abyss and the ancient forest spirit of Carnan materializes to battle its nemesis. You do whatever you can to assist Carnan but this is truly a fight among ancients. Tor-Goroth is still weak from the summoning ritual. He flees once Carnan gains the upper hand, leaving a trail of fire and fury behind him.

A Tale of Fire and Ice

You tell Celebrimbor she is truly a power to be reckoned with. The spirit of Carnan has witnessed Middle-Earth’s devastation and its revival many times over, he replies. It was here before any of us and she will be here long after we’ve perished. Carnan invites you to ride on her back and together you chase the trail of ash and flame to an icy cavern. But it’s a trap and Tor-Goroth attempts to ambush you. Frantically you flee the cavern and reach a clearing, a frozen lake atop an icy mountain. Here Carnan takes the form of a giant frost dragon and the two ancient elementals, ice and fire, battle to the death. The battle between these forces is ferocious and eventually Carnan drives the Balrog into the icy depths of the waters below. Here he shall remain encased in his icy prison.

An Army of the Dead

You travel to Carnan’s woods deep within the forests of Nurnen. The battle with Tor-Goroth has weakened her and she rests in her lair. You speak of Zog the Undying and she tells you he is near, that a foul smell lingers in the air. Celebrimbor pledges an oath to Carnan that you’ll find Zog and honor her sacrifice. As you travel to the source of the stench you find an army of revenants, dead who walk again. As you find him Zog tells you the dead will take Mordor for themselves as he once again vanishes leaving you to deal with his minions. Celebrimbor tells you Zog is dangerous and perhaps his acolytes even more so. You agree and set off to track them down.
