Maize farming is one of the booming agricultural business in my place.

My maize farm happen to be just some distance away from where I live which makes it alot more easier to walk to.

Farming maize in my place come in two seasons of the year as maize crop takes at most six months to grow and mature in to fresh new maize plant before they are harvested.

Maize planting in my place is in the first season which we call raining season where planting usually occur between the months of April and may, while the second season that's the dry season is between the month of August and September.

Planting during raining season is a little bit different from the dry season due to the almost complete absence of rainfall making farmers to mainly depend on mechanized system of farming where water from rivers or any close source of water is pumped straight into the farm.

Mechanized farming may be quite expensive but it involves very minimal amount of human labor and energy.

Maize farming system

Pre-planting operation

This hugely involves farm clearing( bush clearing, stumping, bush burning, tilling and ploughing, application of herbicide....)

Planting (where by the best seeds are selected from all the seeds, and with the increase of science and technology we have seen the cross breed of disease resistant varieties of plant with high producing breeds which has resulted in a more improved variety, this varieties can grow and mature within three to four months and with a great production rate allowing farmers to carry out the two season farming effectively.

Post planting(weeding, application of pesticides and fertilizer application)

Harvesting operation

Post harvesting operation harvested plants are separated from the maize crop and are stored in silos.

An intensive, adequate and serious approach to this type of farming yields a huge harvest provided that there are no cases of disease or pest and that the land being used for planting is fertile.
