The effective range of a .177 air rifleThe effective range of a .177 air rifle is about 100 yards. Anything longer is not likely to be effective, and the further away you shoot the more wind will affect your shot.
The reason is because of FPS (feet per second) and bullet drop. If you drop a .177 pellet from 100 feet in the air it will only fall 5 feet before it hits the ground, so you can see how little accuracy would be required for a good shot. Also, if you were trying to hit a target at those ranges with that kind of accuracy then there are better options available to you such as a .22 or .25 cal air rifle instead.
This is all assuming you're using a scope as well. If not, then you'll need even more accuracy as your target gets bigger as well as your distance from it increases.
If you use a scope on your air rifle then you can extend your range by about another 50-100 yards or so, depending on the scope and how far out you're shooting.
