The effective range of a .177 air rifleThe effective range of a .177 air rifle is about 100 yards. Anything longer is not likely to be effective, and the further away you shoot the more wind will affect your shot.177_air_rifle.jpg

The reason is because of FPS (feet per second) and bullet drop. If you drop a .177 pellet from 100 feet in the air it will only fall 5 feet before it hits the ground, so you can see how little accuracy would be required for a good shot. Also, if you were trying to hit a target at those ranges with that kind of accuracy then there are better options available to you such as a .22 or .25 cal air rifle instead.

This is all assuming you're using a scope as well. If not, then you'll need even more accuracy as your target gets bigger as well as your distance from it increases.

If you use a scope on your air rifle then you can extend your range by about another 50-100 yards or so, depending on the scope and how far out you're shooting.
