And I realize
Impossible dreams
Keep us alive,
Provide a refuge
From storms outside.
Perhaps too often
I retreat to dreams
But want to protect you—
Take you to dark bays
Where the Moon sleeps,
Far from this world
And all its griefs.
Sometimes I feel
I’m drifting away —
An ember on a breeze,
Caught up
To the Moon’s dark seas;
But all the pigments
From my dreams
Can’t cover my scars
Or erase your sad face,
Any more than the Moon
Can eradicate
The black tar
Of centuries
Of stellar waste…
And I grieve my colours,
The spectra
Of a million stars,
Can't soothe your pain
Or cover my scars.
