People dread silence because it is transparent; like clear water, which reveals every obstacle—the used, the dead, the drowned, silence reveals the cast-off words and thoughts dropped in to obscure its clear stream. And when people stare too close to silence they sometimes face their own reflections, their magnified shadows in the depths, and that frightens them. I know; I know.

For two days my phone went silent. Abe and Cindy were off somewhere quietly putting together their case against Hans Bauer and the Aryan Brotherhood and Nat and the rest of the team were in abeyance, having done their jobs, awaiting my guidance.

But I had no guidance to give. I had only questions and a dread of finding the answers.

I was absolutely shocked. The Black Sun had double the amount of Neanderthal DNA in their bodies compared to Europeans. So what the hell were they―aliens?

It was the first time I let my mind veer in that direction, but honestly, it made no sense. Aliens by the mere fact of being here would be more advanced than us, so why the hell would their genes contain so much ancient DNA?

I said this group was shadowy, and no doubt they were, but far more murky and inscrutable than I ever imagined.

These thoughts were going through my mind as I walked back from my morning lecture toward my office. I was not too preoccupied, however, to fail to notice a black limousine that pulled up to the curb beside me.

The windows were blacked out but my eye was drawn to the car license plates. They weren't the usual blue on white Ontario plates but white on red and this plate read 001-CDA. Only ambassadors or heads of diplomatic missions had such plates.

While I was staring at the plate, the rear window of the limo rolled down and an older, white-haired man addressed me.

"Professor Bloom, I'm Tszi Bieler. Abe sent me. We should talk."

The driver came round the vehicle and opened the door for me. I hesitated a moment and then thought, What the hell, and caved and climbed in beside the man.

The older man then spoke to his chauffeur, "Let's go the lake, Ari―it's a lovely day."

He was right, it was a crisp, sunny October day but a drive to the lake was the last thing on my mind.

The man realized my anxiety and smiled compassionately.

"Abe felt he wasn't the best one to answer your questions, Laird, so I agreed to speak with you, on a confidential basis of course. Is that agreeable with you?"

"I have a lot of questions, Mr. Ambassador."

The older man chuckled. "Ah, so you are a very perceptive young man―just as Abe said. That's good, I'll try my best to satisfy your curiosity."

"To tell you the truth, Mr. Ambassador, my interest in The Black Sun goes beyond 'curiosity'. I want to know why the Canadian government negotiated with the Aryan Brotherhood and allowed the Inuit to cede some of their lands to a group they considered Original People with rights equal to their own."

"Good questions, Blair. I'm sure that seemed shocking to you, but the Canadian government thoroughly investigated and found ample proof this tribe inhabited the land pre-dating the arrival of the Inuit, and in fact, The Black Sun allowed the Inuit to settle on their land and co-exist in peace with them.

I stared open-mouthed at the Ambassador.

He mentioned ‘ample proof’? I wanted to know what kind of evidence could be so compelling for the Inuit to acknowledge a group that supposedly predated them, when such an idea was at odds with traditionally accepted academic views.

Equally as puzzling to me was the high proportion of Neanderthal DNA found in the members of this tribe.

There had to be a compelling reason for the silence of the German and Canadian governments.

The fact of such silence and the governments' reluctance to be forthcoming was an indicator to me that the reason would be earth-shattering.
