Major Storm Long Island Fierce Winds Heavy Rain Thunderstorms
Fasten your seat belts for a very rough day coming up for Monday. High wind warnings are in effect for Long Island with wind gusts exceeding 60 mph for much of the day. Gusts to hurricane force (75 mph) are not out of the question. Weather conditions are starting to deteriorate tonight as clouds are thickening up. Winds have picked up a bit but the strongest winds will start to howl after daybreak and last though tomorrow evening. The peak winds will likely occur between 11am and 5pm.
Rain is advancing quickly on the regional radar across Virginia and Maryland and should arrive here shortly after midnight. The local radars are starting to pick up on that rain as it moves to the northeast.
Monday will be just a very bad day. Strong winds all day long will combine with heavy rain and some thunderstorms. The Storm Prediction Center has Long Island on the edge of a marginal risk of severe weather at the moment but we could see this forecast adjusted by SPC Monday morning.
Rainfall amounts will be in the 1 to 2 inch range with some locally higher amounts in thunderstorms. Also along the South Shore the strong south wind could bring in some coastal flooding at high tide so be on the look out for some issues in vulnerable low lying areas south of Sunrise Highway. Weather conditions should improve Monday night as winds ease though it will still be windy for awhile. Better weather should move in for Tuesday.
