In some ways I agree with below comments from @cryptoandcoffee about players retiring before they reach the twilight of their careers. But I imagine that many players must be so wholly entrenched in the life of a professional sportsman that contemplating anything else is very difficult. Not all players are suited for commentary or coaching.
