People do not fully grasp how creative an attacker can get with their malware, just recently we've seen the fiasco with the wannacry ransomware, a virus that was able that take advantage of a gap on the windows system. An operating system from a company like Microsoft was not able to keep their code 100% flawless and free from exploits, this shows what determined hackers can do.
When I look at these huge stream of cryptocoins appearing left and right I see a major opportunity for malware infections, cryptocoins can be an easy way for malware developers to steal data and putting you at risk.
When you decide to invest or mine a coin be always wary of the wallet and extra software they give you, never leave things to chance, always use good precautions like good virus scanners, anti-virus and browser safety too for when you enter their website.
But do not think that your antivirus can detect everything.
Lucky7Coin for example was used by an attacker saying he was "reviving the coin" and posting a wallet client with altered code to include a backdoor:
This backdoor virus wouldn't show up on any anti-virus, you could try virustotal and nothing would show up.
Malware can be easily hidden using cryptors too, basically what cryptors do is encrypt the virus, scrambling the data and making the virus undetectable for AVs then when the virus is opened a bit of (not encrypted)code is run to decrypt the virus and run it, pretty simple but effective.

While you download a blockchain of a coin how do you know you're not downloading something else. Also things like PoS are a perfect excuse for a backdoor virus, since to stake you have to keep your wallet running on your PC and be connected to the internet possibly allowing data from your PC to be uploaded.
While checking out new coins be very careful, even if your virus scan doesn't turn up anything it does not mean that you're fully safe.
