Snakes do too much good to kill them, we have only experienced one in a home and called a local snake catcher to remove it, at the time being new arrivals to Durban learned it was a harmless bush snake (since then made a concerted effort to know more).

Lovely story on how you Mother reacted, snakes are always around in the garden, respectfully giving them space they normally never bother one.
